Dennis John Stender

Dennis J. Stender, 70, of Hamburg, New York, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2025 after a brief illness. Dennis was a proud family man, Navy veteran and avid sports fan beloved to those who knew him.

Dennis was a devoted brother to Michael (Laura), Leeanne, Scott (Jaye) and Katherine. He adored and was adored by his many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews and was affectionately known to them as Uncle Denny, or UD. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Robert Stender (2014) and Norma Jean (Adams) Stender (2013).

Born and raised in Eden, Dennis was only one year and 11 days younger than his brother Michael, a fact he always shared with delight. His father, a mason and bricklayer, taught him many of his tradesman skills throughout childhood. Dennis graduated from Eden High school in 1972 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1975. A proud Seabees, Dennis worked in the construction battalion as a builder.

Dennis found joy in many activities, including reading, politics, traveling to visit family and friends, and sharing the genealogy and history of his family. He was an active member of the American Legion and an avid Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan, always enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He enjoyed cooking, especially for people he loved, and could always be counted on to create a delicious meal. Throughout his life, he lived in many places, but Saranac Lake always held a special place in his heart.

Dennis’ legacy will be remembered as a kind person, positive and supportive of his family and many friends. He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.

A celebration of life will be held on June 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Waterhole in Saranac Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dennis Stender’s memory may be made to The American Legion #880 in Eden, New York, 716-992-3304.
