Campbell R. McCabe

Campbell R. McCabe (“Mac”), 88, of Rochester, New York, passed away on Sept. 10, 2024.

Born on Oct. 6, 1935, in Troy, New York, he was the son of the late Elwood W And Belva C. (Campbell) McCabe.

As a boy Campbell grew up in Troy and Gloversville playing many sports. When he was in high school his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he played basketball and baseball.

Campbell was fondly known to his family and friends as Dad, Grandpa, Popparoni, Great Papa, Mac, Cam, Big Brother and Uncle Cammy.

Campbell is a Navy veteran who served from 1953 to 1956. He was a 1960 graduate of Hartwick College in Oneonta, where he played on the first collegiate soccer team at Hartwick. For many years he was involved in Hartwick’s Alumni Association. Campbell spent many years with his young family camping throughout the Northeastern U.S. region. He also traveled to Europe on many occasions to visit his son Tom and travel throughout Europe. His sister Belva Lee and son Tim live in Georgia where he made many visits. His daughter Alison lives locally, so much time was spent with her and her family.

Campbell was employed for many years with Travelers Insurance Company starting in Albany, New York, transferred to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and then Rochester, New York. After retiring from Travelers, he was a real estate agent then a bus driver for Saranac Lake and then Rochester and Grand Island, New York, area schools.

Campbell was a volunteer at Roswell Cancer Institute in Buffalo for over 10 years. He was for many years a volunteer for “Camp Good Days and Special Times,” an organization for children with cancer. He was also a soccer coach and troop leader in the Boy Scouts of America. In the early 1990s, he went to Haiti twice with the Peace Corps. Even though he was constantly harassed by Buffalo Bills fans, he was an avid Miami Dolphins fan.

Campbell is survived by a daughter, Alison M. (David) Humberstone of Perry, New York; sons Thomas E (Sarah James) McCabe of London, England and Timothy J. (Karen) McCabe of Canton, Georgia; his companion, Barbara Fontana of Rochester, New York; and Barbara’s children, Victoria (Stephen) Fontana-Demirjian of Boston, Massacusetts, and Lawrence (Danielle) Fontana of Rochester; sister Belva Lee (John/“Jack”) Hawks of Powder Springs, Georgia; grandchildren Morgan (Neil) Skinner, Kirsten (James) Troiano, Madison (Logan) Mamer, Jacob Campbell Humberstone and Emma (Benjamin Knapp) Humberstone; five great-grandchildren; ex-wife and mother of his children, Ellen Zibbideo; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings Eugene (Doris) McCabe, Loren (Nancy) McCabe and Raymond (Betty) McCabe.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Campbell will be laid to rest in the Western New York National Cemetery in Corfu, New York.
