Carol L. Ackerman
Carol L. Ackerman, 92, a beloved homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose warmth and nurturing spirit touched the lives of all who knew her, peacefully passed away on July 30, 2024, at the Tupper Lake Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Born on Dec. 22, 1931, in Norfolk, to the late Eli and Viola (Monroe) White. Carol was raised and educated locally, graduating from Potsdam High School in 1950. After graduation, she married Oren Ackerman on Sept. 7. He passed away on Oct. 31, 2010. They celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Carol embodied a feisty spirit and dedicated her life to caring for and raising her family.
She owned and perfected her skill for crocheting. She crocheted blankets for her family, loved ones and various organizations like children’s daycares, preschools, Mercy Nursing Home in Tupper Lake, and Uhlein Nursing Home in Lake Placid. Her passion for crocheting and giving back to the community brought comfort and joy to many. Carol enjoyed spending time at the Saranac Lake Adult Center, honing her crafting skills and socializing with friends. She was a member of the West Stockholm United Methodist Church and was a huge fan of the NY Yankees.
She is survived by her children Cindy Hovland and her husband Craig of Saranac Lake, David Ackerman and his wife Sue of Hannibal, and Dianne Foreman and her husband Bret of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; grandchildren Jennifer (Rich) Stavenhagen, Megan (Brad) Roberts, Greta (Chris Spicer) Hovland, Stephanie (Tim) Pritchard, and Karl Ackerman; great-grandchildren Madeline Stavenhagen, Henry Stavenhagen, Nevin, North and Miles Roberts, Tully Spicer and Addison Pritchard; brothers Joseph White, Robert White and Phillip White; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her husband and parents, Carol was predeceased by her brothers, Raymond White and Gerald White, and sisters, Dorene Davis, Lillian Alvarez and Shirley Burlingame. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, Aug. 8, from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service to celebrate Carol’s life will take place at the conclusion of visitation at 1 p.m. Her burial will follow in Winthrop Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband, Oren.
Following Carol’s services, everyone is invited to gather at the American Legion in Winthrop.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the West Stockholm United Methodist Church or Hospice. Carol’s legacy of love, kindness and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May her memory be a blessing to those dear to her.
