Daniel Hildreth Steidl

Daniel Hildreth “Dan” Steidl, of South Burlington, Vermont and former resident of Greenwich, Connecticut and Rainbow Lake, New York, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on July 9, 2024 at the University of Vermont Medical with his family by his side.

Dan was born in Saranac Lake on March 2, 1937, the son of Dr. John Henry Steidl and Anita (Jones) Steidl. He married Nancy Hoagland on Sept. 7, 1957 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Dan led a distinguished life as a patent lawyer, dedicating his career to the nuances and protections of intellectual property.

Dan was a loving husband to his wife, Nancy Steidl, and a cherished father to his children, Karl, Hilary, Heidi and Jake Steidl.

His warmth and guidance also extended to his role as a grandfather to Kurt Steidl and Lindsay Steidl Beadon, Tyler Bean and Heather McLoud, James Anders Steidl and Charlotte Steidl, great-grandfather to Duncan McLoud, Ella Beadon and Daphne Steidl, enriching the lives of those around him with love, laughter and wisdom during his time with us. Daniel touched the lives of many with his compassionate nature and infectious laughter. He enjoyed the outdoors, boating and gazing at the stars. He had a profound love for music, spending hours playing his favorite tunes on the piano, filling the hearts of those around him with joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anita and John Steidl of Saranac Lake, his uncle Ken Jones and brother, John H. Steidl, Jr.

Funeral arrangements are in care of Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A private memorial service will be held at St. John’s in The Wilderness in Paul Smiths later this summer to honor Dan’s life and legacy. In remembrance, and if so inclined, a contribution to remember Dan would be appreciated by the family to The Planetary Society in lieu of flowers, supporting a cause that was dear to Dan.
