Dorothy (Martin) Mitchell

Dorothy (Martin) Mitchell found joy in family, close friends and her art.

Dorothy, born in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1927, was the youngest of three children to Joseph and Mary (Rogers) Martin. She married Robert Mitchell (1924-2009) in 1949 and the two created decades of happy memories.

The couple spent their early days together on Martha’s Vineyard, celebrated holidays at family gatherings in Fall River with siblings and all the kids, prioritized summer vacations on the Cape and ultimately settled in Dennis, Massachusetts with their two daughters. Most recently, Dorothy lived for seven years in Saranac Lake, before returning to Cape Cod and the Mill Hill Assisted Living Community a few months ago. She passed away at home with her daughters by her side.

Dot’s life was woven together by her creativity and love and dedication to her family and friends. She poured her creative talent into every decade of her long life. Fashion sketches and still life watercolors played with light and color. Dot always noticed a thoughtful detail and the natural beauty of a colorful sunset, an angry sky and changing leaves. A fearless cook, she tried every cuisine while carefully navigating her husband’s simple palette. Birthday cakes and Halloween costumes were handmade and rivaled the professionals, and no home felt more like Christmas in December. She transformed actors into characters at Fall River Little Theatre as a volunteer make-up artist, ran a floral arrangement business with a close friend and, most recently over the past 20 years, quilted hundreds of beautiful pieces we’ll forever enjoy.

Dorothy joins dear predeceased family: Her husband Robert Mitchell, her parents Joseph Martin and Mary (Rogers) Martin, siblings Charles and Rose, brothers-in-law Frank Sullivan and John Mitchell, sister-in-law Lillian (Kuzniar) Mitchell. She leaves behind many more loved ones: Daughters Karen (Mitchell) Wolff, Kathleen (Mitchell) Gomez, sons-in-law Robert Wolff and Joseph Gomez, grandchildren Casey Wolff and his partner John Battaline, Brian Wolff and his wife Lauren (Murphey) Wolff, Abigail Wolff, Molly Gomez, Caroline Gomez, Ivy Gomez, great-grandson Connor Wolff, sister-in-law Helen (Mitchell) Sullivan, loving nieces, nephews, Barbara Foulsham and many dear friends.

The family is grateful for the loving care and support from Saranac Village at Will Rogers and Saranac Lake Health Association in Saranac Lake, Mill Hill Assisted Living facility in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, Broad Reach Hospice of Cape Cod and Seaside Home Care in Chatham, Massachusetts.

Services and a celebration of Dorothy’s long and amazing life will be held in late April on Cape Cod. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Saranac Lake Health Association or Broad Reach Hospice.
