Sabra Adele Wilson

Sabra Adele Wilson (they, them, their), age 29, of Lake Clear, died on Aug. 30, 2021 following a long struggle with the effects of trauma and mental illness. Sabra was born on June 6, 1992 in Saranac Lake to Peter and Pat Wilson.

Sabra was a lifelong student: part of the area’s homeschool community, attended Saranac Lake High School, was a graduate of St. George’s School in Newport, Rhode Island, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and French from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and a Master’s degree in History from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.

They worked for North Country Association for the Visually Impaired (NCAVI) as a vision rehabilitation therapist (VRT) assistant, traveling throughout the North Country to teach people with vision loss. Sabra was enrolled in the University of Massachusetts at Boston’s Graduate Studies program to become a fully certified VRT. They had a passion for helping others maintain their independence.

Sabra had many talents and interests, including reading (their library is varied and extensive), playing and watching hockey (go Bruins!), painting, baking, tea, and music (especially singing in choirs). They enjoyed working with power tools, electric and carpentry, first in school theaters, and later at home. They built their own bookshelves, and loved working with their Uncle Mark on maintenance projects. They never met a dog they didn’t like. Sabra was a member of the LGBTQ community.

They will be very much missed by many, including Sabra’s parents, sister Arianne Wilson, of Washington, D.C., their canine family, Hoshi and Zydeco, and all their aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

The family would like to express love and gratitude to Danny Ryan and Rev. Joann White, who provided Sabra and the family with valuable counsel in recent months. Thanks also to the New York State Police and the state Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers, and others who recently provided assistance and comfort.

There will be a memorial service for Sabra on Monday, Sept. 6, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Sabra’s memory to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society, NCAVI, Saranac Lake Free Library, the Trevor Project, NAMI, or another charity of your choice.

Most of all, hug and care for the people you love. Try to understand them and accept them for the people they are. Show and share love.
