Kathryn (Kitty) Peightal

Kathryn (Kitty) Peightal, lifelong resident of Saranac Lake, passed away peacefully on Sept. 8, 2021. She was born June 10, 1927 to Elwood and Ruth Ober. Kitty married John “Jack” Peightal on Sept. 3, 1948.

She was raised on Riverside Drive at the home that was purchased by her grandfather in 1910 so her grandmother could cure for tuberculosis while having her 5 children nearby. She met the love of her life in seventh grade and knew right then that she was going to marry him. After graduating from SLHS in 1944, she attended Syracuse University, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor’s Degree in art and industrial engineering.

After graduating, she and Jack got married and moved to Albany while he attended Albany State Teacher’s College. She worked for the Singer Sewing Machine company. Upon his graduation, they moved back to Saranac Lake where she raised her 3 daughters in that same family home. She worked as a teacher assistant for many years and was also an accomplished pianist, playing the organ every Sunday at the First United Methodist Church for over 25 years. She became very involved in many community activities such as the Women’s College Scholarship Fund, Girl Scouts and PTA.

After Jack died, she continued to stay busy. She traveled extensively with her sorority sisters and other friends. She volunteered in the Adirondack Room in the Saranac Lake Free Library, was a docent at the VIC Butterfly House, was a member of Historic Saranac Lake, and spent many years volunteering for Pine Ridge Cemetery. Kitty was an avid reader, quilter and gardener. She is survived by her two sisters Dorothy (Peter) Cheo and Carolyn (Jim) Bulgey. She is also survived by her three daughters: Kathy (Jeff) Parker, Ann (Bob) Willette, and MarySue (Darren) Dalton. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Jason, Jen, Jon, Chris, Rachel and Kelly; and one great granddaughter Chloe.

Calling hours are set to take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14. A funeral service will immediately follow at Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, with Rev. Eric Olsen officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Ride Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
