Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Doyle

Betty Doyle

Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Doyle, age 97, of Plattsburgh and formerly of Saranac Lake, died of stroke Monday, March 23, 2020 at C.V.P.H Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Born in Saranac Lake on Nov. 17, 1922, she was the daughter of Syraic and Etta (McGrain) Dupree. Betty married Edward James “Eddie” Doyle, Jr. on Thursday, May 11, 1944 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake. After Saranac Lake HS, she graduated from Canton ATC. Betty, a devout Catholic, was a member of the 3rd Order of the Franciscans.

Betty loved working in her yard, building and rebuilding stone fireplaces and flower beds. One of her cherished activities was house painting and she would completely paint the exterior and interior of her house, including furniture, clothes and even the family car. For every season and all holidays, Betty completely decorated the house inside and out. She loved garage and yard sales and was very creative in remaking things she bought from these sales.

Besides being a busy homemaker, Betty loved her work in the food services group for the Saranac Lake School District. She developed lasting friendships with her co-workers over those 20 years and is remembered by the students for how she decorated the cafeteria for games and holidays. A very social person, Betty loved parties and entertaining others. She and her husband Eddie loved to dance anything, especially the Big Band Era, the Jitterbug and Rock and Roll. She, like her brothers and sisters, was a great storyteller and all looked forward to the many Dupree/Doyle Family Reunions that occurred from 1976-2018.

She is survived by her sons: James (Terri) Doyle of Bellevue, Washington, and Patrick (Christina Loren) Doyle of Plattsburgh, her daughters: Donna Doyle of Burlington, New York, Meagan (Doug) Brown of Post Falls, Idaho, Kelley Doyle of Oneonta, New York, and daughter-in-law, Robin (Tim) Doyle of Saranac Lake, as well as nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Edward, her son Timothy Doyle, her daughter Shannon Doyle and her father and mother Syraic and Etta (McGrain) Dupree. Betty was also preceded in death by six brothers: Bernard, William, Donald “Ducker,” Paul, Raymond “Tuffy” and Robert Dupree; and four sisters: Eileen Wood, Leona Dupree, Marie, Fogarty, and Muriel “Babs” Anson.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, private family services will take place at the convenience of the family and a public service will take place at a date to be announced. Burial will be at the St. Bernard’s Cemetery in the spring.

Family and friends wishing to remember Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Doyle may make memorial contributions to Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Dept. or St. Bernard’s School, both in care of the funeral home.
