Kenneth L. Hare

Kenneth L. Hare, 78, of Lake Placid, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 28, 2019, while on vacation in Williamsburg Virginia.

Mr. Hare was born on March 21, 1941. He was the son of the late Walter Hare and the late Gertrude (Torrance) Hare. He married the late Carolyn Wilkins on April 6, 1963. He graduated from Lake Placid Central High School and joined the Navy in 1960. He served with distinction on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Forrestal until 1964. While serving in the Navy, he trained in electrical engineering and firefighting. He was a member of the Naval Shipboard Firefighting Squad while serving on the Forrestal.

  In May of 1971, Ken joined the Lake Placid Fire Department, where he served for 50 years, being an active member until the time of his death. Ken served in many capacities in the fire department over his 50 years of service, including chief, chaplain, chairman of the Nominating Committee, chairman of the Fire Prevention Committee, fire police, rescue and first-aid squad, safety officer, Benevolent Committee and treasurer. He also served with the Essex County Fire Police Association, Essex County Fire Advisory Board, he was a past president of the Northern New York Fireman’s Association and a delegate to the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York, and the Fire Police Association of New York at the State and local levels. 

  Ken was a self-employed building contractor and a residential property caretaker, actively working until the time of his death.

He is survived by one daughter, Barbara LeFebvre and her husband John of Onchiota; one son, Brian Hare and his wife Karen Hare of Jay; and one granddaughter, Eva Fox and her husband Isaac Fox of AuSable Forks.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at M.B. Clark Inc. Funeral Home, 2310 Saranac Ave., Lake Placid. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5 at the funeral home with the Rev. Skip Trombley officiating. A fireman’s prayer service will followed by an American Legion prayer service. Burial will follow in North Elba Cemetery, Lake Placid. A reception will be held at the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Hare will be greatly missed by the community and all those who knew him.
