Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Roberts

On March 15, 2019, Elizabeth Veronica “Betty” Roberts, a longtime resident of Saranac Lake, passed away in Lady Lake, Florida.

Betty was born March 3, 1926 in Glasgow, Scotland, to Reginald and Elizabeth Quayle. During World War II she trained as a sick children’s nurse. At the age of 21 Betty emigrated to the United States with her adoptive parents Bill and Betty Jarvis, proprietors of the Hotel Alpine in Saranac Lake, in 1947.

On Sept. 17, 1949, at the Episcopal church in Saranac Lake, she married Robert T. “Bob” Roberts, the former president of the Saranac Lake Federal Savings and Loan Association.

Betty was an RN and worked for many years at the Saranac Lake General Hospital, which was located on Winona Avenue (currently North Country Community College) and then Lake Colby Drive. She was an excellent golfer and a prolific knitter, artist and quilter. Her quilts have won numerous awards at shows in and around central Florida.

Betty is survived by her husband of 70 years, Bob Roberts of Lady Lake, Florida, and her sons Thomas Roberts (Diane) of Saranac Lake and Lady Lake, and Kenneth Roberts (Sandra) of Tucson, Arizona.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, Saranac Lake. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake, where she will rest next to her parents.
