Mary E. Defayette

Mary E. Defayette, 74, of state Route 3 in Cadyville, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont with family by her side.

She was born in Peru on May 7, 1940, the daughter of the late George and Mae (Deso) LeBlanc.

Mary Defayette, affectionately known as Meme to close friends and family, was the glue that held the Defayette family together. When Meme spoke, everyone listened, and few dared to challenge her. “Yes, Meme,” was always the loving phrase at the end of every discussion.

A true Frenchie, she loved playing cards, pinochle being the game of choice, when family visited. If the group was large a game of “21” or “Love Thy Neighbor” began. Even the youngest in the family could find a spot around the table, as long as they didn’t cry when they lost! Defayette Family Card Rules always prevailed.

She was a lover of birds and animals and over the years had many close canine companions, including the pets of all her family members. Mary was a woman of strong faith and will be greatly missed by the entire family. The family thanks the Lord for the special times, unfaltering caring and compassion she provided to all of them over the years as they grew, married and raised families of their own. There will never be another Meme Defayette.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Lyman Defayette; her children and their spouses: Stephen and Joan Defayette of Ticonderoga, Daniel and Deborah Defayette of Peru, Dennis and Nancy Defayette of Queensbury, Thomas and Sharee Defayette of Geneva, John Defayette of Saranac Lake, Melanie Defayette and Laurie Williams of Cadyville and Kevin and Catherine Defayette of Plattsburgh; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother Robert and her sisters: Colleen, Betty, and Gwen.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at St. James Church in Cadyville. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
