Alan Sheren

Alan was born in Brooklyn on July 10, 1928. After graduating from Franklin K. Lane High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. Following his discharge he joined the New York City Police Department, from which he retired in 1975 with the rank of sergeant.

Prior to moving to the Adirondacks, Alan was active in the United States Power Squadron, teaching boating safety for more than 20 years. During that time Alan and his family frequently vacationed in this area, which resulted in him moving to Upper Saranac Lake upon his retirement.

Alan served his community as the Santa Clara magistrate from 1984 to 2010. Upon his retirement he told an interviewer that his favorite part of being magistrate was presiding at weddings. (He performed more than 300.)

Alan was also active in the Upper Saranac Lake Association, being heavily involved in the preservation of the quality of the water in the lake.

Alan and his late wife Molly were both Adirondack 46ers, completing this achievement with a climb of Mount Haystack in 1995. Alan was also a licensed private pilot and enjoyed hiking, fishing and skiing with his family and grandchildren. Grandpa Alan was adored by his grandchildren.

Alan was predeceased by four siblings, as well as his wife Molly, who died in December 2012.

He leaves behind a son, Lorne, of New Vernon, N.J., and six grandchildren: Piper, JD, Tyler, Meredith, Allison and Matthew.

A memorial service will be held on June 28, with details to follow.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Adirondack 46rs at P.O. Box 180, Cadyville, NY 12918, for use in maintaining the trails in the High Peaks area that Alan loved so much.
