Robert B. Squires

MASSENA – Robert B. Squires, 83, of Churchill Ave., Massena, died Monday evening, Dec. 2, 2013, at the Massena Memorial Hospital where he been admitted earlier in the day. Robert was born April 25, 1930 in Massena the son of Robert L. and Gertrude (Billings) Squires. Following his graduation from Massena High School, Robert entered Cornell University, graduating in 1952 with a degree in agriculture. Robert married the love of his life Mary Parlow Sept. 19, 1953, at the Presbyterian Church in Potsdam. Mary preceded Robert in death May 27, 2008.

Robert was the president and owner of Homestead Dairy with stores located at one time in Ogdensburg, Potsdam and Massena. For many years Homestead had the milk plant in Massena. Robert was a life member of the Massena Elk’s Lodge B.P.O.E No. 1702, longtime member of the Monday Luncheon Club, where he volunteered as treasurer, the Massena Kiwanis Club serving as president a member of the St. Lawrence Lake Yacht Club; Past President and member of the Dairy Foods Association; served on the Massena Savings and Loan Board of Directors from 1983 to 2005. He enjoyed hunting at the Stillwater Hunting Club, he and his wife Mary enjoyed many summers boating in Alexandria Bay.

Surviving Robert are his children: Robert P. and wife Patty of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., David E of Massena and Mrs. John (Jane) Ward of Saranac Lake; and a grandson, Liam Ward of Saranac Lake.

Robert was predeceased by his sister Caroline Squires in 2005. Robert also recently lost their beloved companion dog Zipper.

Calling hours were held Thursday at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena. Services for Robert were held this morning at the Emmanuel Congregational Church with the Rev. Judith Van Kennen officiating. Robert was a member of the Masonic Lodge F & AM 513, Shrine Media Temple and Jester. The Lodge held a service in Robert’s honor Thursday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in the family plot in Pine Grove, Massena.
