A movie theater in SL would be a dream come true

Last week, Saranac Lake village Mayor Clyde Rabideau threw out an idea on his Facebook page: Would you like to see a movie theater in Saranac Lake?

My answer: HELL YES!!!

However, I personally feel like there should be some stipulation to this fantasy movie house.

Lake Placid and Tupper Lake already have the Palace Theatre and the Adirondack State Theater, respectively. I’ve yet to visit the State, but I do love the Palace — cheap tickets, cheap snacks and beautiful decor. Both theaters show the blockbusters and what’s new from Hollywood, so I think we should separate ourselves from that competition. I think the theater in Saranac Lake should strictly be for classic screenings.

The Palace does these types of classic screening every so often, but in Saranac Lake, it could be consistent every week.

Imagine it is 2020, and you just bought a movie ticket only it’s not for “Ant-Man 3” or the next installment of the “Conjuring” universe, it’s for “Jaws,” the first summer blockbuster that terrified moviegoers in the summer of 1975. Or maybe you’re a parent, looking to take your kids to a flick. Pixar has been slacking on quality in that department lately and “Sonic the Hedgehog” looks like a childhood killer. Instead, you take the rugrats over to the Saranac Lake theater for a classic screening of “The Iron Giant” or “The Sandlot.”

Clyde got the idea for a movie theater in Saranac Lake after his wife brought their granddaughter to the State to see “Frozen 2.” I get that. Adults gotta take the kids to see the new Disney movies. It’s just part of American life. However, the State and the Palace already take care of that market. A Saranac Lake theater would give kids the chance to see the movies their parents grew up with. Some of my favorites growing up were the Harry Potter movies. I would love to take my nephews to see the boy who lived, just like my mom took me.

And maybe there could be a suggestion box outside of the theater of what old films people would like to see. No doubt that thing would be stuffed with the likes of “Citizen Kane,” “Star Wars” and “Rocky.”

Clyde also suggested to help maintain a theater, which, let’s face it, is a rather niche product these days, it be attached to a bar and restaurant. That’s an awesome idea. It could be like an Alamo draft house. Also, any theater you can drink in is pretty dope, just ask anyone who’s ever been to a show at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. Those adult sippy cups are where it’s at.

Like I’ve said in a previous riff, streaming is the wave of the future because of its accessibility, but nothing tops going to an actual movie theater to watch a film.

We’re already the weird, bohemian community in the Tri-Lakes, let’s double down and have a non-conforming movie theater, too.

Obviously this is just my dream scenario for a movie theater. If a theater did come to Saranac Lake and just showed what’s new, I’d still be down for that.

Let’s make it happen, Saranac Lake.
