Solid Sound Festival combines music, art and more

Event at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art expected to sell out

Solid Sound is not your typical music festival. Started in 2010, Solid Sound is a music festival held at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). The concept began with the Indie-rock band Wilco, where each year, they handpick musical guests and oversee the overall theme and execution of the event.

Tired of the hot and overcrowded summer music festivals, Wilco was looking to give their fans something more. As Wilco’s front man Jeff Tweedy explains it, “The big festivals to me are, I don’t think they’re very musical. I mean the only real desire was to make a festival we wouldn’t be miserable at.”

Perhaps what makes this Solid Sound stand out from other summer music festivals is Solid is the venue itself. Located in North Adams, Massachusetts, MASS MoCA sits on a the 13-acre campus of 19th-century factory buildings renovated to house one of the most expansive contemporary art collections in the country.

According to Alex Crothers, president of Higher Ground Music, who works behind-the-scenes to organize the festival, Solid Sound’s draw is both the location and “broad and eclectic nature of the programming.”

“Mass MoCA is just a terrific location because it’s always new and exciting every year,” said Crothers. “For us, for the patrons, it’s exciting every time we come back because there’s always a new [art] exhibition. For example, if you came last year, you’re going to be seeing all new exhibits [this year].”

Crothers is especially excited this year because of the wide-ranging line-up of musicians.

“So there’s Wilco obviously, Courtney Barnett, Tortoise, but we also have everything from experimental hip-hop with artists like Clipping or Milo to experimental jazz with guys like Rafiq Bhatia. He’s a big name on the New York City jazz scene and the Julian Lage Trio too. These artists are really making ground-breaking stuff,” said Crothers. “We get to put on such an eclectic line-up because of the simple fact that Wilco fans, Solid Sound fans trust us. They put their confidence in us to give them an amazing weekend of music and we can’t let them down.”

With a line-up of approximately 30 bands and musicians, Solid Sound packs a ton of music into three-days. New this year, Wilco announced they are adding a live-band karaoke session with the band themselves. Approximately 5-10 lucky fans were selected to sing with Wilco onstage after they submitted a performance of themselves belting out songs on Youtube or Instagram with the hashtag #WilcoKaraoke.

For those attending Solid Sound for the first time, Crothers does have some advice for newcomers.

“I can go on and on about the music, but my biggest advice is to spend a healthy amount of time within the museum. Come early on Friday or stay late on Sunday, but MASS MoCA, for those who haven’t been, the museum is 250,000 square feet of some pretty amazing art exhibits. I can’t say enough about the place. They’ve been truly great partners.”

Besides the music, Solid Sound will also feature John Hodgeman’s Comedy Stage with John Hodgeman (former correspondent of The Daily Show), Aparna Nancherla, Jean Grae, Doughboys, and Rhea Butcher. Penguin Random House Publishing, the company that published Jeff Tweedy’s biography will also be holding an author workshop with popular writers such as Cheryl Strayed, author of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling memoir Wild. There will also be a Q&A discussion with the authors on Friday after the workshop.

“There’s just so many things to do and take in. The music, the museum and even the food. We’ll have a ton of food trucks on-site,” said Crothers. “Mad Libs will be there too as part of the kids activities, so we really have a lot going on.”

He’s not kidding. The three-day (June 28-30) festival will also feature other activities, such as axe throwing, nature hikes, a screen-printing workshop, and yoga.

According to Crothers, tickets are selling out fast. Weekend passes ($189) and single-day tickets for Friday & Sunday ($74), Saturday ($129) and children 6-10 ($55) can be purchased at solidsoundfestival.com.
