The weather might be weird, but there are still some iconic winter activities to check off the Adirondack Bucket List. Taking a horse-drawn sleigh ride with a lakeside or High Peaks view is just one of them. Adirondack Sleigh Rides at Lake Placid’s John Brown Farm and the Lake Clear Lodge and Retreat put their own twist on a cozy woodland sleigh ride. Each location will only be offering sleigh rides for a few more weeks.

Adirondack Sleigh Rides is owned and operated by Plattsburgh’s Country Dream Farm. Each Saturday owner Melissa Provost brings her team to the historic John Brown Farm (weather permitting) for a 30-minute loop through woods with views of the Olympic Ski Jumps and Adirondack High Peaks. Sleigh rides are offered by reservation only by calling 518-561-8941 or 888-818-2701 or online at AdirondackSleighRides.com. The group cost is $40 for adults, $15 for children or free for children (3 and under) with private rides available. There is hot chocolate in the warming shed as well as access to all the John Brown Farm historic sites and trails. Country Dream Farm is offering rides on Saturdays through March 10, 2 to 6 p.m., before moving to a local sugarhouse to offer rides for the annual Maple Weekends.

Nearby Lake Clear Lodge and Retreat, Lake Clear, wants to make sure you get the full Adirondack Great Camp experience. Sleigh rides are offered each Saturday through March 3 from 3 to 8 p.m. Reservations are required to hold a spot by visiting LodgeonLakeClear.com or calling 518-891-1489. Sleigh rides are $35 for adults or $10 for children (10 and under). Sleigh rides are about 30 minutes on a wooden sleigh decorated with jingle bells. The path starts right at the Lodge entrance and meanders through a path lined with 20 to 30 lighted old-fashioned kerosene lanterns before circling back along the shores of Lake Clear.

The Lodge continues to connect its lengthy history through its food. A truly interactive experience is signing up for a Lantern-lit/Speakeasy Dinner ($85 per person). Be prepared to be stopped by a 1920s bootlegger, being passed some age-appropriate “moonshine” and given a password to enter the hidden Speakeasy. When the 1920 copper makes an entrance, use the secret table cubbies to hide drinks. Once the police leave, feel free to continue to enjoy the three-course Speakeasy meal. Cross your fingers for just a few more weeks of snow to round out the winter season.
