Daniel Szasz has been the concertmaster of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra since 1997 and has held the Dearnley-Happel Chair for concertmaster with the Lake Placid Sinfonietta since 2006.

A versatile musician, interested in performing both standard and less familiar repertoire, Szasz has been consistently praised for his “expressive, rich and warm sound” as well as for his “strong, confident, and assertive playing.” His performances have been described as “breathtaking” and “exquisite” and have generated enthusiasm among his audiences and in the press.

Born in Romania, Szasz began playing the violin at age 6 under the supervision of his father, a former principal trumpet player with the Sibiu State Philharmonic Orchestra.

While a student at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj, Szasz landed a position with one of the top orchestras in Romania, with which he toured Europe extensively, recorded and performed as a soloist.

He continued his studies at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland, then moved to the United States where he studied chamber music with members of the Franz Schubert Quartet, Audubon Quartet and Fine Arts Quartet.

He has won many awards including the “Public Prize” at the Vittorio Gui International Chamber Music Competition in Florence, Italy, playing with his wife, pianist Alina Voicu.

He has participated in the Graz Music Festival in Austria; the Sopron Music Festival in Hungary; and the Blossom, Chautauqua, and New Hampshire Music Festivals in the United States.

In the summer of 2006, Szasz won the position of concertmaster for the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, where he has held the Dearnley-Happel Chair since that time. Some of Szasz’s most notable collaborations over the years included solo appearances and chamber concerts with violinists Jaime Laredo and Andras Agoston, pianist Yakov Kasman, cellist Alban Gerhardt; mandolinist Chris Thile and bandoneonist Raul Jaurena.

In 2004, in collaboration with the Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra, Szasz initiated the establishment of an annual summer music festival in Romania that promotes American music and supports active professional interactions between Romanian and American musicians.

Szasz is also become extremely involved with Music4Romania, a nonprofit organization aimed to help orphanages and schools in Romania while promoting Romanian music and culture in the U.S. and internationally.

Daniel Szasz performs on a rare 1755 Italian violin crafted by Bartolomeo Calvarolla.

As with all Lake Placid Sinfonietta concerts in this series, concertgoers are offered a complementary meet-the-artist reception following the performance. The Lake Placid Sinfonietta is a twenty member professional chamber orchestra comprised of top orchestral musicians from around the country.

The orchestra is celebrating its 99th Anniversary Season in 2016.
