Choreographer Twyla Tharp returns to the LPCA Saturday

LAKE PLACID – Legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp returns to the Lake Placid Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. Saturday, marking the company’s return to Lake Placid for the first time in over 30 years.

Tickets range from $20 to $40 and are available by calling the LPCA Box Office at 518-523-2512 or online at www.lakeplacidarts.org.

“We are proud to be a part of the national celebration of Twyla Tharp and her 50th Anniversary Tour. The company’s return on July 2 marks their return to the LPCA for the first time since the 1980s. We are excited for a program featuring two early to midcareer works as well as a new piece that promises to be equally impressive.”

Twyla Tharp and dancers present a mixed program of repertory and new work that will tour across New York State this season. Country Dances, Tharp’s 1976 work, opens the program. Set to music from America’s heartland, the dancers do-si-do through square dance adaptations. The World Premiere of Tharp’s dramatic new work featuring longtime Tharp dancer Matthew Dibble with the company, set to Beethoven’s Opus 130, follows. Closing the program is 1980s tour de force, Brahms Paganini, a work for six set to Books I & II of Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Opus 36 by Johannes Brahms. This dance showcases the virtuosity of Tharp’s dancers, featuring a male soloist who dances all of “Book I” and a quartet and female soloist who display a high level of technical precision and stamina in the movement of “Book II.”
