Adirondack Singers ring in holidays with annual concert

SARANAC LAKE – The Adirondack Singers will host performances of its annual Winter Holiday Concert with “A Mix of Old and New” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Long Lake and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake.

The Adirondack Singers is a local community choir with members from the Tri-Lakes and surrounding areas.

Some old traditional holiday melodies are featured in new arrangements for choir-the “Wassail Song” and the melodies “Warum Solltich” and “Gabriel’s Message,” both from the mid-15th to 16th centuries.

Two new gospel style carols bookend the traditional “Sweet Little Jesus Boy,” a MacGimsey spiritual from the early 1930s. Rounding out the first half of the program will be Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” with Christmas lyrics by the group, Cloverton.

There will be an appearance by the Adirondack Barbershop Coalition. Members of the group are Rick Burdt, Alejandro Negron, Jen Scofield and Rich Loeber.

The second half of the Singers’ program features 20th century holiday music, including an arrangement of “Amid the Falling Snow” by British musician Enya.

Fun treatments of “Santa Baby” and other seasonal favorites bring the performance to a conclusion with an arrangement of “Let There Be Peace on Earth.”

The Adirondack Singers are directed by Karen Butters, with Carol Lombard at the piano.

The suggested donation for the concert is $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens.
