A snowy scene

SARANAC LAKE — Kathy Ford looked over the moonlit winter scene she painted and hung in the front window of her home on the west end of Lake Street, near the intersection with Petrova Avenue on Tuesday.

Pointing to a man pulling a sled and holding a child’s hand in the center panel, she said, “That’s ‘Grumpy.'”

“Grumpy” is her granddaughter Pippa’s 2-year-old pronunciation of “Grandpa.” Ford said the child holding his hand is Pippa. The two boys sledding on the hill are her sons and the girl making a snowman is her daughter-in-law.

She’s “taking the photo.”

This is the 39th year Ford has turned her window into a canvas for Christmas.

Ford tells people to feel free to drive through her pull-through driveway to get a closer look at the mural.

She pulls inspiration for her annual paintings from Christmas cards and Pinterest. She found this scene several years ago, saved it and recently rediscovered it.

For years, she painted directly on the large plate-glass window. But after it cracked and had to be replaced several times, she switched to painting on three plexiglass sheets instead of directly on the window. She donates these panels to local nonprofits.

When the window cracked before, she had thought about getting a smaller window, but her sons — who grew up helping her with the annual tradition — demanded she keep going.

“No you can’t! You have to paint the Christmas window!” she said they told her.

She said one day she might get vinyl prints of her past windows to display. But her boys tell her they want her to keep painting new ones forever.

This year’s work will stay up until Jan. 14, or maybe until the end of January.

Starting at $3.92/week.
