TUPPER LAKE — Monday was the last scheduled Tupper Lake Village Board meeting for two longtime trustees, Leon LeBlanc and David “Haji” Maroun.
The terms for trustee-elects and political newcomers Brasen LaVassaur and David Plummer begin on Dec. 1. For LeBlanc, it closes out 18 years of service on the board over nine consecutive two-year terms. He was first elected in 2007.
Maroun has served on the village board for a decade, one term from 2012 to 2014, two terms from 2016 through 2020 and most recently from 2021 to 2025. Maroun ran for reelection, but finished behind LaVassaur and Plummer at the Republican village caucus in June. LeBlanc declined to seek reelection, citing health reasons.
The two were thanked for their service by village Mayor Mary Fontana at Monday’s meeting, though Maroun was absent.
“It’s a thankless job, and I really appreciate your dedication,” Fontana said. “I’m sure the community does as well, so thank you very much.”

After a round of applause, LeBlanc thanked the mayor for the kind words. Tupper Lake Free Press Editor and Publisher M. Dan McClelland commended LeBlanc as well.
“Good job, Leon,” he said. “Good job, buddy — I’ll still see you there at Stewart’s in the morning.”
LeBlanc had a simple response.
“You can count on it,” he said. “You can take it to the bank.”
The new board’s organizational meeting is set for Dec. 15, the same date as its next regular meeting. The board is expected to establish its regular meeting schedule for next year, along with other housekeeping items.

LaVassaur, Plummer and Fontana — who was reelected in this year’s general election — all have terms that will run through Nov. 30, 2027. Unlike many local offices that were shifted to even-year elections with the passage of a new state law, abbreviating their term lengths this cycle, the village mayor and trustee positions were not impacted. Deputy Mayor and village Trustee Eric Shaheen, along with village Trustee Richard “Rick” Pickering, are serving terms that are up for election again in 2026.
