Last minute donations flood assembly race

Republican candidate Brent Davison received $15,110 from the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee, the political arm of the Assembly Republican Conference, Oct. 21, and $37,500 on Oct. 23.

Democratic candidate Michael Cashman received $3,000 from 1199 SEIU, the state’s largest health care union, $1,000 from the New York Democratic Rural Conference and $3,000 from the state AFL-CIO on Oct. 25, according to 24-hour reports filed with the state Board of Elections.

The election has entered the period when candidates must report any contribution of $1,000 or more within 24 hours of receiving it.

As of Oct. 20, the final full campaign finance report before the election, Davison had $56,209 in his campaign fund, and Cashman had $47,822, Davison, a retired state police commander, and Cashman, Plattsburgh town supervisor, are running in a special election to fill the remainder of the term of former Assemblyman Billy Jones, D-Chateauguay, who resigned to become vice president of Clinton County Community College.

Democrats have been outspending Republicans once outside spending is factored in.

Public campaign funding has boosted Davison’s coffers, while Cashman has not received public funding, as of Oct. 20.

Davison spent $90,468 between Oct. 3 and 20, mostly for television advertising and campaign signs.

Cashman spent $2,115, including $1,000, for newspaper advertising.

Separately from Cashman’s campaign, the Assembly Democratic Campaign Committee, the political arm of the Assembly Democratic Conference, spent $150,072 in support of his campaign.

Davison raised $120,898 between Oct. 3 and 20, including $87,980 in public matching funds of small-dollar donations.

Individual contributions of $500 or more included Kelsey Moody of Fayette, $3,500, of which $500 was refunded; Stephen Rodd of Chazy, $1,041; Assemblyman Robert Smullen, R- Johnstown, $1,000; Francesca Conti of Plattsburgh, $520; James McCartney of Albany, $500; campaign of Assemblyman Matt Simpson, R-Lake George, $500 and campaign of Assemblyman Ken Blakenbush, R-Watertown, $500.

Political Committee and labor union contributions to Davison’s campaign were as follows: New York State Troopers PAC, $3,000; Clinton County Republican Committee, $500; New York Investigators Association, $500; Saranac Republican Committee, $200; Champlain Republican Committee, $100.

Cashman raised $25,032 between Oct. 3 and 20.

He did not report any public matching funds.

Individual contributions of $500 or more to Cashman included former Assemblyman Billy Jones, $3,000; Mark Schneider of West Chazy, $1,050; Kirk Baugham of Jay, $1,000; Meghan Rini of Plattsburgh, $1,000; James Calno of Plattsburgh, $500; Ann Bener of Plattsburgh, $500.

Former Democratic congressional candidate Mike Derrick contributed $250, and the campaign of current Democratic Congressional Candidate Blake Gendebien $100.

Political committee and labor union contributions were as follows: Communications Workers of America District 1, $3,000; Northeastern States Regional Council of Carpenters, $3,000; Essex County Democratic Committee, $3,000; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, $1,000; Franklin County Democratic Committee, $500 and Constable Democratic Committee, $100.

The 115th District includes all of Clinton and Franklin counties and the towns of St. Armand, Wilmington, Jay, North Elba and Keene in Essex County.

Election Day is Nov. 4.
