TUPPER LAKE — There was no shortage of smiles, wags and woofs as people and pets alike filled the Tupper Lake Waterfront Park for the fifth annual ADK Bark in the Park Sunday afternoon.

Hosted by the Tri-Lakes Humane Society, the fundraiser saw several hundred two and four-legged participants peruse rows of vendors, watch some tips and tricks from the Adirondack High Peaks Dog Training Club, take advantage of free microchipping offered by local veterinarian Dr. Jacquelyn Bentley and mix and mingle with one another.

Local rock ‘n’ roll band Double Axel kept the hits bumping throughout the afternoon, professional artist Joe Ferris sketched caricatures for pets and their owners and USA Bobsled-Skeleton National Team athletes were in attendance for a meet-and-greet, among other attractions for event-goers.

ADK Bark in the Park is one of the Tri-Lakes Humane Society’s biggest fundraisers of the year. Board of Directors Vice President Kim Charland took a lead role in organizing the event this year.

“It is so nice to see our communities come together like this to support us,” she said. “We had a record number of supporters this year. Our registrations are higher than ever. It’s just an incredible event and it’s very exciting.”

Charland said the event has grown a lot since its inception, when it began as a dog walk with treat stations. She said it’s a positive sign as renovations continue at the shelter to get it into compliance with new state standards set to take effect in December. Charland said things were coming along slowly, but surely.

“It’s a work in progress,” she said. “But everybody’s been very generous and we just keep pushing.”
