Potsdam getting ready to start DRI project construction
POTSDAM — Construction is set to begin on Potsdam’s long-awaited Downtown Revitalization Initiative streetscape and riverwalk projects, the village has announced.
Initial work will start this fall on Raymond Street and the Sandstone Art Walk, with Market Street and Maple Street construction scheduled for spring 2026. A groundbreaking ceremony is being planned to formally launch the effort. Site preparation will begin in the coming days.
Funded by the New York Department of State through the village’s $10 million 2019 DRI award, the project marks one of the largest downtown investments in decades, according to village officials. Planned improvements include upgraded streets and sidewalks, new landscaping and street trees, energy-efficient decorative lighting, fewer overhead wires, improved drainage, clearer signage, public art, and other features to enhance downtown’s look and accessibility.
The Riverwalk Trail will also be extended to form a complete loop around all three downtown bridges, improving access to the Raquette River and nearby parks.
“We are approaching a milestone — the long-awaited start of our Downtown Streetscape and Riverwalk projects,” Mayor Alexandra M. Jacobs Wilke said in a statement. “As we prepare for initial site work, the Village is committed to keeping downtown accessible and open for business throughout construction. Once complete, Potsdam will have a safer, more welcoming, and more vibrant downtown to benefit our community for years to come. We are grateful in advance for everyone’s patience with temporary changes and disruptions, as our downtown core gets its first major makeover in decades.”
Village officials say they will coordinate closely with businesses and residents and post regular updates on the village website and Facebook page. A public open house will also be held to share details and answer questions before Market Street work begins.
Local businesses will remain open during all phases of construction, and residents and visitors are encouraged to continue shopping and dining downtown to help support the community.
Construction will proceed in phases through 2026, with substantial completion expected by next fall.
