OkTupperfest back in Flanders Park on Saturday

Kids Row returns for second year

TUPPER LAKE — OkTupperfest will return to Flanders Park this Saturday, with hay rides, live music, food and craft vendors and, for those 21 and up who wish to partake, bier tastings from six local and regional craft breweries.

The town of Tupper Lake Recreation Department has organized and hosted the event for the past three years, after it took the reins from the Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce. Recreation Director Laura LaBarge said last year presented “perfectly beautiful” weather, and they are hoping for the same this year.

The town held the line on ticket prices, keeping them the same as last year, with $5 for kids and general (non-alcoholic) admission, which includes unlimited hay rides. This year, those will be pulled by a tractor, instead of being horse-drawn. LaBarge said that for the kids, there will be several large inflatable bouncy toys, and several obstacle courses.

For $25, adults will be given a commemorative OkTupperfest 5-ounce glass brew stein at the gate. From there, they can make their way around for unlimited tastings between the six breweries until the bier runs out. These include:

¯ Bandstand Brew Works (Warrensburg)

¯ Ledge Hill Brewing Co. (Ticonderoga and Peru)

¯ Meier’s Creek Brewing Company (Cazenovia)

¯ Raquette River Brewing (Tupper Lake)

¯ Valcour Brewing Company (Plattsburgh)

¯ Woodland Farm Brewery (Utica)

LaBarge noted that, to ensure there is enough bier, the number of drink tickets sold will be capped at 500. If the limit is reached, $5 general tickets will continue to be sold at the gate throughout the event. Adult drink tickets can be purchased online in advance at tinyurl.com/y5eumvm6, and will be sold at the gate as well. General/kids tickets will be available at the gate.

Live music will be performed by Sideshow. LaBarge said it’s a newly-formed band, but its members — Max Gerstenberger, Pete Jarvis, Leon Jessie and Aaron Mozdzier — are local and have playing experience in other bands.

“They kind of cross all genres of rock,” she said. “Everything from Ozzy Osbourne to Tragically Hip to 90s and early 2000s Alternative.”

Five food vendors and approximately 40 craft vendors are anticipated at OkTupperfest. Of the craft vendors, about a dozen will be children selling their own products and creations as the town recreation department brings back its ever-popular Kid’s Row, which was rolled out last year.

LaBarge credited town recreation department member Hayley LaLonde with the idea, and said it’s a great opportunity for kids to try their hand at entrepreneurship in a real-world, but supportive environment.

“It gives them some pride in what they’re doing, some confidence in business ventures,” LaBarge said.

OkTupperfest is a great way to get offline and support local businesses, while having an afternoon of fun, LaBarge noted.

“We just want to get people out of their houses, away from their screens,” she said. “Come and have a beverage, enjoy the beautiful views that we have here and we want business to our local craft vendors and our local food vendors. This is a boost to their livelihood.”

She added that the backdrop is beautiful and Flanders Park, which is located off of Martin Street, is a hidden gem of sorts.

“A lot of locals don’t realize what Flanders Park is, where it is and have never been to the band shell before,” she said. “Part of the reason that we decided to move it down here was to showcase this beautiful property that we have access to here in town.”
