LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Public Library has extended the length of its book loans from 14 to 28 days. Not sure how to use the extra reading time? Lake Placid librarians have a few book recommendations.
Assistant Librarian Madonna Barney said the extended loans will save staff time since they won’t have to call people as frequently about late books. She said they have some patrons who don’t live in the area and even call from other countries to extend loans until they are back in town.
Plus, it’ll give everybody more time to read.
Barney likes to read historical fiction — a longtime favorite of hers is “The Baker’s Secret” by Stephen Kiernan. Since the coronavirus pandemic, she has been a part of a book club made up of five of her 11 sisters. They recently finished “Long Island,” a novel by Irish author Colm Toibin. It’s the sequel to his book, “Brooklyn,” which was the basis for a movie of the same name. Barney recommends both.
Assistant Librarian Linda Blair said two recent books she has read and recommends are “Chariot on the Mountain” by Jack Ford and “The Letter Carrier.”
