KEENE — Be prepared for traffic delays on the road between Lake Placid and Keene in the coming weeks.

The state Department of Transportation will be re-surfacing two sections of state Route 73, reducing the Cascade Pass and the road between the airport and the Mount Van Hoevenberg sports complex to one lane of alternating traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays between Aug. 11 and Sept. 5.

Work on a 4-mile stretch from the southern end of Lower Cascade Lake — the end closer to Upper Cascade Lake and the Cascade Mountain trailhead — to Gilmore Hill Road is set to start on Aug. 11 and last through the last week of August.

Work on a 5.5-mile stretch from Recycle Circle Lane to Bobsled Run Lane is set to start on Aug. 13 and last through Sept. 5.

DOT Region 1 spokesman Scott Cook said motorists and cyclists should anticipate delays and build extra time into their schedule.

The single-lane travel will be controlled by flaggers on either end of the work.

“Know that if you’re in that area, you are going to come across a closed lane and a person flagging traffic,” Cook said. “We are people in those work zones.”

The Cascade Pass is already a tight section of road, hemmed in by the lakes and cliffs. It is frequented by cyclists and hikers heading to the Cascade and Porter trailhead.

Cook said cyclists must follow same rules of the road as motorists.

He asked everyone to be aware of the stops and eliminate distractions when approaching the work sites.

Construction activities will be weather dependent.

Starting at $3.92/week.
