Police cracking down on drunk driving through Labor Day

More police officers will be on the roads around New York state until Labor Day, as the state cracks down on impaired and reckless driving in the last two weeks of the summer season.

Announced on Friday by Gov. Kathy Hochul, the surge will include both state police and local officers collaborating with sobriety checkpoints and increased road patrols until Sept.1. State police will use both marked and unmarked vehicles on highway patrols.

“As family and friends celebrate the summer festivities, we’re stepping up our efforts to keep New Yorkers safe on the road,” Hochul said. “Public safety is my number one priority — and whether you’re heading to a cookout, the beach or the fair, we’re focused on getting you there safely.”

The surge coincides with the national ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign that is seeing increased enforcement action in other states across the country.

Last year, the state surge led to 20,714 tickets for various vehicle and traffic violations, including 4,374 tickets for speeding and 966 for driving under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.

“I thank all our dedicated law enforcement officers statewide for working tirelessly to remove impaired and reckless drivers from our roadways and putting their lives on the line every day to make our communities as safe as possible,” said state DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder. “Please don’t make their already difficult jobs harder when you are driving. Obey speed limits, don’t be distracted and always have a plan to ensure you never drive impaired. That way, we all can have a safe and happy end of summer and Labor Day weekend.”

State officials are also encouraging New Yorkers to download the ‘Have a Plan’ app which allows a user to designate a driver, call a cab or a rideshare, review the consequences of drunk driving, and allows them to report a drunk or impaired driver.

Starting at $3.92/week.
