LAKE PLACID — Dmitry Feld passed away 19 months ago, but his presence remains in the Lake Placid community that he called home.
Feld was the marketing manager at USA Luge who created the annual barbecue and music festival nearly 20 years ago to raise money for the Shipman Youth Center. The event was rebranded last year as Dmitry’s Feast of the Peaks and Music Festival and will remain the same this year on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will take place at the North Elba Show Grounds on state Route 73.
“The youth center is Thomas Shipman’s dream, while Dmitry and all the past volunteers over the past 25-30 years made the center a place for the youth of the community to gather with activities and receive mentorship,” said Mike Durham, President of the Shipman Youth Center Board of Directors and chief organizer for the upcoming festival. “As the proverb goes, ‘It takes a community to raise a child,’ and it’s with that in mind that we continue with this fundraiser.”
Among the highlights of the day: this year’s festival will feature an international tasting with Greek, Polish, Peruvian, Italian fare and more. Local restaurants are providing the food. Entrance to the tasting is $20 per person. Also, there will be inflatables for the children as well as face-painting, balloon art and caricatures.
There will also be a raffle with a $3,000 grand prize. Tickets are $50 each, and only 600 tickets will be printed.

The Shipman Youth Center was the creation of Lake Placid police officer Thomas Shipman, Sr. Feld felt the need to extend Shipman’s legacy by serving the community’s youth with needed funds. The Shipman Board of Directors carries on with both missions.
