A smoother ride

SLK gets $710K grant to repave taxiway

LAKE CLEAR — The Harrietstown-owned Adirondack Regional Airport is getting a $710,836 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to renovate one of its taxiways for a smoother ride.

Airport Manager Corey Hurwitch said this is a grant where the state pays 2.5%, the town pays 2.5% and the FAA pays 95%. But, he said the project involves a bit of soil disturbance, which the FAA will not pay for and will be paid for out-of-pocket by the airport.

Taxiways are the roads aircraft use to get to and from the runways. SLK has five of them. Taxiway D is the largest. Currently, it has an average pavement condition index of 49 out of 100, which is rated as “poor” condition, Hurwitch said.

It’s still usable, but makes for a bit of a bumpier ride and was eligible for funding.

Hurwitch said the airport will rehab the taxiway with a “mill and fill” and repaving.

He said the taxiway can be viewed from CAVU Cafe, looking straight out. It goes straight out and bends to the left. It’s one of the taxiways used by Cape Air, which has commercial flights to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City and Boston Logan International in Massachusetts daily.

This federal funding was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program and Airport Infrastructure Grant Program, which is distributing $66.7 million in federal funding for 22 airports in New York.

The funding was announced Tuesday by U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer, the minority leader, and Kirsten Gillibrand, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Transportation Subcommittee.

Starting at $3.92/week.
