Whiteface Club to host second Alzheimer’s fundraising effort

LAKE PLACID — The Whiteface Club and Resort is set to host the second annual The Longest Day fundraiser on Wednesday, Aug. 6, benefitting the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association, Northeastern New York chapter.

Day-long activities will mark the fundraising efforts that will feature golf, tennis, a silent auction and a barbecue with live music.

At 6 p.m., the Cafe on the Green will be the point where all aspects of this do-it-yourself fundraising event intersect at the end of this longest of days.

“A year ago, Mark and Pam Sperling brought this to our attention when Pam was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and this year, family members of our team have received the same diagnosis,” said Tracey Brooks, who succeeded Mark Sperling in May as the CEO of the Whiteface Companies. “Our inaugural event was a rousing success and it’s only natural to continue this on a yearly basis. The cause is outstanding — it raises awareness about this disease, but also communicates the point that life doesn’t have to change because of a diagnosis.”

Pam Sperling proved as much by fulfilling a lifelong desire to be a rock star. She teamed with local entertainer/guitarist Steve Wyle at the 2024 fundraiser and sang some of her favorites before a packed room.

“Last year’s event left a lasting impression. We were deeply moved by the incredible generosity shown by the Lake Placid community and all those who attended,” said Brooke Dubuque, North Country Program Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association, Northeastern New York Chapter. “Pam’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection. Her husband recognized that her memory issues were more than just normal aging, which led to an early diagnosis. That’s the message we continue to emphasize–early and accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer’s can make a significant difference for individuals and their families. While a cure remains our ultimate goal, there are treatments available in the early stages. And thanks to events like this, our chapter can offer free care and support services to families in need.”

Event organizers are searching for sponsors and auction prizes for the day. Among the auction items secured thus far is a one week stay in October at the Westin Mission Hills Resort Villas in Palm Springs, Calif.

Individuals can donate and businesses can contribute prizes by calling Michelle Hill at the Whiteface Club.

Several sporting events, including golf and tennis tournaments will be part of the fundraising lineup. For more information, call the tennis center at 518-304-3910. Participants can enter the four-person golf scramble by contacting the pro shop at 518-523-PUTT.
