Tupper Lake Lions Club celebrates 90 years

TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake Lions Club is approaching its 90th anniversary. The club was established on Aug. 12, 1935, and over the years, hundreds of Tupper Lakers have joined and followed the Lions’ motto of ‘WE SERVE’. Currently, there are 40 members, the most since the 1990s.

It is one of the oldest Lions Clubs in Northern New York and has sponsored several other North Country clubs in years past.

This year is the 100th anniversary of Helen Keller’s challenge to the Lions to become “knights of the blind.” Over the Lions Clubs’ 90 years, they have adopted that mission, providing assistance to people in need of eye care services and collecting and recycling thousands of eyeglasses. In addition, they have supported the youth in many ways, including scholarships, supplemental resources to local athletes and the student assistance fund.

Founded by Melvin Jones in 1917, Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world, with over 1.4 million members.

While they do not have a formal event planned, they wanted to share our Lions Pride with the community. They are gathering for a casual meet and greet, the Lions Club cook out from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Little Wolf Beach in Tupper Lake on Wednesday. The public is invited.

Stay tuned, in 10 years they will celebrate our Centennial in style!
