Hearing upcoming on LPCSD Code of Conduct and Safety Plan

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid Central School District will be holding a hearing on the updated Code of Conduct and Safety Plan. The hearing will take place at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12 in the Board of Education Room at 50 Cummings Road.

The Code of Conduct up for adoption this year includes an addition to the dress code stating that outerwear, including various types of coats and jackets, must be stored in designated areas such as lockers during the day and should not be worn indoors during the school day.

The second change to the code is in the section prohibiting corporal punishment, which is defined as “any act of physical force upon a student for the purpose of punishing that student.” Section 5300.55 of the code now includes updated language explaining that corporal punishment does not include using physical restraint to protect any person from physical injury when other methods cannot be reasonably used. The district will be implementing a few improvements during the 2025-26 school year that were identified during a full security audit by Altaris Security Consulting. This includes calibrating door alarms for propped doors, lockdown buttons in multiple office locations and making improvements to the district’s evacuation and reunification processes.

Some changes to the safety plan include changes in terminology mandated by the state Education Department. The district has been required to add additional safety procedures for after-school events. It has also added protocols for potential extreme heat conditions, including monitoring room temperatures and relocating activities when possible.

The plan will also include some changes in practice, such as not conducting multiple drills in one day. To review the district-wide safety plan, visit tinyurl.com/zb4677jz.

Following this month’s hearing, the full safety plan must be adopted at the beginning of September and submitted to the state and to law enforcement in October.

Starting at $3.92/week.
