SLHS students get look inside village government

SARANAC LAKE — Eighteen Saranac Lake High School students got a tour of the Saranac Lake village offices on Thursday, and shadowed department heads on their jobs to learn more about how the village runs.

SLHS Principal John Dann said the school did these tours years ago, but they stopped. Last year, the Saranac Lake Elks Club restarted the tours for its annual Government Day.

Students met village employees — most of them SLHS graduates themselves. These are the people they’ll pay taxes to when they buy property, and the people who provide them and their families services now.

On Treasurer Kendra Martin’s wall, students were excited to see a framed photo of SLHS Athletic Director Forrest Morgan, her fiancee, photoshopped as Leonardo from “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Martin said she got the photo from Morgan’s brother-in-law in a Secret Santa their family does.

“Forrest!” the kids shouted.

After the tour, the students were divvied up between the department heads to see what a day on the job is like for them — visiting the wastewater treatment plant, the police station and the fire department.

Starting at $4.75/week.
