TUPPER LAKE — Backed by a strong offensive night and shut-down pitching on Tuesday, the Tupper Lake baseball team is heading back to the sectional championship for the second straight year.

Playing in the Section X, Class C semifinal at the Municipal Park’s Raquette Pond Stadium here, the Lumberjacks cruised to a 10-0 victory — in five innings — over the Lisbon Golden Knights to earn a trip to the championship.

The defending sectional champion Lumberjacks will play the Norwood-Norfolk Flyers in the title game Saturday at 3 p.m. in Canton at St. Lawrence University’s Tom Fay Field. Lumberjacks head coach Dan Brown said his team was focused on getting back to this game.

“These guys have been literally living together for the last three months, and I feel like every year that’s the story with our team, but this year they are mini golfing, they’re up at the golf course or playing blitzball — whatever that is,” he said. “They are always together, and they came here today and there was just this look of we’re going to take care of business, just nose to the grindstone, and that’s exactly what they did.”

Karter Kenniston pitched all five innings for Tupper Lake, striking out six while allowing just two hits — both of which came in the first inning.

“Then we shut it right down after that,” Brown said.

The senior ace pitched four straight 1-2-3 innings en route to the victory.

“He pitched well, he threw hard — probably the hardest he’s thrown all year,” Brown added.

The Lumberjacks built a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Kenniston and Charlie Skiff scored off a passed ball and a sacrifice fly, respectively. However, the team really took command of the game when Luka Dukett hit a bases-loaded triple with two outs in the second, which scored three runs and pushed the score to 5-0.

“Anytime you get a two-out triple that scores three runs, that’s huge, especially out of a freshman,” Brown said. “(Dukett is a) guy who has hit the ball hard all year and has been working up to that big moment, and I was happy to see that.”

Tupper Lake extended its lead in the next two innings, following a sacrifice RBI from Cooper Cuttaia in the third, and a run in the fourth from John Tower, who scored off fielding errors.

In the fifth inning, Cuttaia hit a two-run double to right center before Gauge LaValley’s sacrifice fly drove him in and activated the 10-run mercy rule. The Lumberjacks are now 15-3 overall and have won nine straight games.

Kyler McClain led Tupper Lake’s seven-hit outing with a pair of singles. Teammates Skiff, Kenniston, Cuttaia, Dukett and Wyatt Godin each had a hit.

Lisbon’s starting pitcher, Owen Jerome, struck out three batters and allowed seven runs before being relieved by Gabriel Smith in the fourth inning. Smith ended the game with one strikeout.

The Knights’ Isaiah White and Blake Woods had one hit each — both in the first inning. Lisbon ended its season with a 4-10 record overall.

Lake Placid 11, Bolton 3

Owen Lawrence rattled off two hits and five RBIs for the Lake Placid baseball team as the Blue Bombers secured an 11-3 road win Tuesday over the Bolton Eagles in the Section VII, Class D semifinals.

Lake Placid, which lost to the Eagles in last year’s title game, will compete for its second sectional title in three seasons. The Blue Bombers, which are the No. 3 seed, will take on the fifth-seeded Johnsburg/Minerva in the championship at Saranac Central High School at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Jon Caito pitched five innings for Lake Placid and allowed two runs. Teammate Jarrett Mihill closed out the contest with back-to-back shutout innings to improve his team’s overall record to 10-4. The Blue Bombers finished the game with eight total hits as Lawrence and Vann Morrelli each had triples.

Bolton jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, however, Lake Placid tied the game with one run in the second, before adding four more in the third. The Blue Bombers then built an 11-1 lead, after scoring six more runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Abram Figueroa and Andy Morehouse had two hits each for Bolton, which finished with seven total hits. Jacob French added a double in the loss. The Eagles used three pitchers — Jaxon Egloff, Jace Hubert and Sully Eager — on Tuesday. Bolton finished the season with a 10-8-1 overall record.

SOFTBALL

Saranac Central 16, Saranac Lake 0

The Saranac Lake softball team’s season came to an end on Tuesday, after the Red Storm fell to the Saranac Central Spartans 16-0 in the Section VII, Class B semifinal round.

The Spartans recorded 16 total hits in the win, while three pitchers — Abby Owen, Irelyn Ryan and Gracie Baxter — combined for the one-hit shutout.

Alexa Roberts pitched a complete game for the Red Storm, striking out one. Lillian Patnode recorded the lone hit — a double — for Saranac Lake.

Saranac Central will now take on the Northeastern Clinton Cougars in the Section VII, Class B championship game on Friday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Salmon River 13, SLP 6

The Saranac Lake Placid girls lacrosse team suffered a 13-6 loss to the Salmon River Shamrocks in the semifinal round of the Section X, Class D playoffs.

The host Salmon River took a 4-2 lead in the first quarter, before SLP battled back to trail 6-5 at halftime. However, after the intermission, SLP struggled to stop the Shamrocks’ fast break. Salmon River outscored SLP 7-1 in the second half to advance to the Section X title game.

Tyler Burth recorded a hat trick for SLP, while Juliana Tremblay, Lizzie Harvey and Kelsi Burth also scored. Harvey, Tremblay and Emma Clark added assists in the loss. SLP’s goalie, Maddie Clark, was solid in net, recording 10 saves.

SLP team ends their season with a 10-5 overall record — all five losses were to Canton and Salmon River.

The Shamrocks will take on Canton in the Section X, Class D title game on Tuesday at SUNY Potsdam.
