Phil LeBlanc, the 2025 co-chair of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Gala Parade, left, hands the Rich Merritt Gimp Trophy to Keith and Marge Murphy, whose “Lake Flower Goats and Friends” walking group kicked up the crowd in the parade in February. The trophy is named in honor of Rich Merritt, a Saranac Laker who traveled up from Albany every year to lead the Gimps in Carnival revelry down Main Street and Broadway. Merritt died unexpectedly in October at the age of 59. An award was set up in his name for the parade group who celebrates “life and camaraderie with infectious energy.” Merritt’s mother, Barb Merritt, chose the Murphy’s goat-themed walking group as the trophy winners.
