Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System launches initiative to enhance communication accessibility

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System has announced a new initiative aimed at enhancing communication accessibility throughout its service area. The goal is to support libraries and reading centers in creating inclusive and welcoming environments for diverse communication needs, while also raising awareness in the wider community.

CEFLS was able to partner with speech language pathologist Trish Friedlander to develop custom laminated communication boards with funding from the Autism Alliance of Northeastern NY. These boards feature a core set of symbols related to common library experiences and are designed to support nonspeaking children and adults. Each board includes simple tips on how to use it to assist someone in need of communication support. Member libraries also received a set of individual symbol cards to post near corresponding areas (e.g., a picture of a book drop displayed near the actual book drop).

Training sessions with Friedlander were also offered at the summer reading workshops for member library staff earlier this year. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the materials and gain insights into how these tools can foster inclusive library interactions.

“Partnering with the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System to bring communication boards to every member library has been a truly meaningful project,” Friedlander said. “This initiative not only supports non-speaking and minimally speaking individuals, but it also helps create more inclusive, welcoming environments where everyone in the community feels seen, valued and heard.”

By promoting communication accessibility, the CEFLS member libraries can help foster inclusion, understanding and connection for all families in the region. Local member libraries include Au Sable Forks Free Library, Keene Public Library, Keene Valley Library, Lake Placid Public Library, Saranac Lake Free Library, Tupper Lake Goff-Nelson Memorial Library, Wells Memorial Library in Upper Jay and Wilmington E.M. Cooper Memorial Library.

The Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System serves 32 libraries and reading centers through economical resource sharing, continuing education, advocacy, access to comprehensive services and by serving as a resource for member libraries and their directors.

Starting at $4.75/week.
