Brass quintet to perform, work with students

Calliope Brass to play free show, work with Bloomingdale Elementary students

SARANAC LAKE — The sounds of brass will fill the air in downtown Saranac Lake Wednesday as Calliope Brass, an award-winning brass quintet, presents a free public concert in Berkeley Green at 6 p.m.

As part of their visit to the Adirondacks, Calliope Brass will also spend time at Bloomingdale Elementary School on Thursday, working directly with third and fourth grade students through their signature educational program, “What’s Your Story?” The program makes connections between music and literacy concepts by bringing stories written by students over a series of three workshops to life.

In a grand finale performance, Calliope the puppet narrates the student-written stories backed by an original soundtrack from the Calliope Brass quintet.

The New York City-based group plays an upbeat and eclectic mix of musical styles, including classical, jazz, film scores and familiar tunes, woven together with storytelling and a warm stage presence.

“Our approach to performing is really what sets us apart from other ensembles,” Executive Director Andrew Ennis said. “We don’t see performing as a chance to present — we see it as a chance to connect, to invite the audience into the experience with us.”

This outdoor concert is part of Calliope Brass’s mission to make the performing arts more inclusive and more deeply rooted in local communities, and is made possible through support from the New York State Council on the Arts. Audiences of all ages are encouraged to attend.

The ensemble expresses deep gratitude to Nathalie Thill at the Adirondack Center for Writing, Katie Laba at Bloomingdale Elementary School and local Calliope Brass aficionado Samantha Marocco for inspiring and helping facilitate this project.

Starting at $4.75/week.
