Structure fire damages house in Tupper
No injuries reported
TUPPER LAKE — Extensive smoke damage from a Friday afternoon structure fire displaced two residents, two cats and two dogs — all of whom made it out safely, according to Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department Chief Royce Cole.
Firefighters responded to 11 Third Street at 2:37 p.m. Friday and were met with a heavy smoke condition. Cole said that all of the people living in the residence made it out safely when firefighters arrived, but the pets were still unaccounted for.
Cole said firefighters moved into the structure and were able to save the two dogs, both of whom were in good condition. He said the two cats ended up evacuating the structure on their own.
“One jumped out the first-story window, and the other one went out the door,” he said.
Cole said that while the cause remains under investigation, when firefighters entered the structure, they found a pile of laundry inside of a plastic bin that was burning in the middle of the kitchen. Cole said firefighters were able to remove the burning pile, which mitigated some of the damage that would have otherwise occurred.
He said firefighters used an extinguisher and water cannon to suppress the fire and smoke, which he said took about an hour. Firefighters remained on scene for an additional two hours for the investigation.
Cole said about 20 members of the Tupper Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded, and that the department did not receive mutual aid. He said most of the damage was caused by smoke, and that it ended up displacing the residents and their pets, who are currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
