Pickering and Shaheen get top votes for Tupper Lake trustee seats
TUPPER LAKE — Barb Denis and Sue Fitzpatrick conceded the Tupper Lake village board race to Rick Pickering and Eric Shaheen after the same-day vote results were announced Tuesday night.
Pickering and Shaheen, both running as Republicans, earned 627 and 602 votes, respectively, according to unofficial results released by the Franklin County Board of Elections workers in Tupper Lake after polls closed. Denis and Fitzpatrick both ran as Democrats, with Denis receiving 382 votes and Fitzpatrick receiving 366.
Pickering, in a Facebook post Tuesday evening, thanked everyone who voted for him and wrote that he was grateful.
Fitzpatrick said she wished Pickering and Shaheen well and vowed to continue advocating, as a citizen, for the issues she ran on, namely trying to improve the water quality for Tupper Lake.
“Congratulations to Eric and Rick,” she said. “But, my mission with the water continues. Twenty-four years is way too long, and there’s no excuse for no answers at this point.”
Denis said she thought she ran a good race, but said she wished she had begun campaigning earlier, adding that she wanted to have met more voters.
“This is a good introduction to the community, and I’m happy for every single vote that I got,” she said. “I’ll be watching, and I’m still going to the board meetings.”
The vote totals above only reflect same-day votes cast in-person. The Franklin County Board of Elections did not include the early in-person and mail-in votes in their total, although Denis and Fitzpatrick conceded the race Tuesday evening. The article will be updated after those numbers become available.
