SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Center for Writing will host Cuban American poet Leslie Sainz. She will read from her debut collection, “Have You Been Long Enough at Table” (Tin House, 2023), on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m.

“Have You Been Long Enough at Table” explores the personal and historical tragedies of the Cuban American experience through a distinctly feminine lens. In investigating the realities of displacement and inherited exile, Sainz honors her imagined past, present and future as a result of the “revolution within the revolution” — the emancipation of Cuban women.

“We’re thrilled to have the accomplished debut poet Leslie Sainz visit ACW this December,” said ACW’s program manager Tyler Barton. “Her book is a testament to the Cuban-American experience through a sharp, feminist lens. Sainz pushes the boundaries of poetry while telling haunting and heartfelt stories about her heritage — writing diverse poems that explore displacement, observe resistance and critique power. Of course, if you join us for the reading, you’re welcome to get on the mic and share a poem of your own!”

A question-and-answer session will follow Sainz’s reading and conclude with an open mic where all attendees are welcome to share up to five minutes of their own writing. There is no cost to attend; register online at adirondackcenterforwriting.org/notice-to-appear.

The daughter of Cuban exiles, Leslie Sainz is the recipient of a 2021 National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship. Her work has appeared in the Yale Review, New England Review, Kenyon Review Online, AGNI, jubilat, Narrative and elsewhere. A three-time National Poetry Series finalist, she’s received scholarships, fellowships and honors from CantoMundo, Miami Writers Institute, the Adroit Journal and Stadler Center for Poetry & Literary Arts at Bucknell University. She is the managing editor of the New England Review and resides in Middlebury, Vermont.

Starting at $4.75/week.
