SARANAC LAKE — Roadies, groupies, stage hands and fans are setting the stage for a star-studded Saranac Lake Winter Carnival in February with the theme “Music Legends,” and the first carnival committee meeting of the season will take place tonight.

Committee chair Jeff Branch said it should be a short, low-key meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on the corner of Bloomingdale Avenue and Church Street. The summer has been quiet, which is a good thing, he said.

It is likely organizers have been brainstorming theme-specific ideas for carnival over the summer, and the volunteer committee will be ready to hear people’s ideas.

The meeting will largely be an organizational and planning event.

There are dozens of committee chairpeople in charge of organizing the numerous events throughout the 10-day celebration. Branch said part of the meeting will be to make sure all the chairs are set and make any changes if there need to be.

Winter Carnival takes place on the first and second weekends of February, with events every day in between. Meanwhile, Branch is hoping for a turn for the cold. It’s hard to get into the Carnival spirit with the temperature in the 70s in October, he said.

“We’ve had a good run, but I’m ready for winter to come,” Branch said.

He said the Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a cold winter, if you believe it, meaning the Ice Palace Workers 101 may have some good thick ice to work with as they build the palace.

Starting at $19.00/week.
