Community comes to aid of Wilmington family after fire

WILMINGTON — A family’s home was reduced to a blackened shell after a fire on Sunday night, and the Wilmington community has already rallied to their aid.

The Wilmington Fire and Rescue responded to a call at the residence, which is near Nye Road and state Route 86 in Wilmington, around 8:45 p.m. Sunday. They received mutual aid from the Jay and Upper Jay fire departments. Fire Commissioner Charlie Terry estimated that there were around 35 to 40 firefighters present. The department returned to the fire station at 4 a.m. Monday. The Peck family got out safely, including their dogs, but were only able to get out with the clothes on their backs, Terry said.

A Go Fund Me was started by Brinn Peck on Monday to help Merit and Sarah Peck, along with their three kids, recover from the fire. As of Tuesday, the fundraiser had surpassed its goal and raised over $19,000. Everything was lost in the fire, so they are asking for donations to buy food, clothes, dog food, leashes and collars for the dogs and other necessities.

A benefit dinner will also be hosted by the Twisted Raven at 8 Whiteface Memorial Highway in Wilmington from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday. They will be serving a deep-fried turkey dinner with sides for a $25 cash donation that will go to directly to the family, according to a Facebook post.

In a press release issued Monday, the Northeastern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross said that volunteers provided immediate emergency aid to five people after the fire.

“The Red Cross provided financial assistance for necessities such as shelter, food and clothing to two adults and three children,” the release stated. “In the coming days, Red Cross staff and volunteers will remain available to help those affected by the fire as they navigate the road to recovery.”

The fire is under investigation by Essex County Emergency Services.
