Trial date set for Lake Placid man accused of murder

CANTON — Adam Smith, 48, of Lake Placid will be tried for two alleged murders in St. Lawrence County Court on Oct. 15.

Smith’s arrest was announced March 7, 2023 by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. He was previously apprehended on March 2 in a stolen vehicle police said belonged to 67-year-old William Freeman, who was found dead that same day in his home in Rossie. Smith is also accused of murdering 72-year-old Ronald Durham a month earlier on Feb. 11, 2023. Durham was found dead in a cemetery in Gouverneur.

St. Lawrence District Attorney Gary Pasqua confirmed that Smith is facing 13 felony counts, including two counts of first-degree murder. Pasqua confirmed that both the Feb. 11 murder and the March 1 murder are included in the indictment.

Pasqua said he could not provide any additional details with the trial approaching.
