A hummingbird sips nectar from a native plant called Jewelweed Saturday in a garden in Saranac Lake. Jewelweed is also known as “Spotted Touch-Me-Not.” At the slightest touch, the plant’s seedpods fling open to disperse seeds, hence the name “Touch-Me-Not.” The sap of the crushed stem is said to alleviate the symptoms of poison ivy and stinging nettle. Hummingbirds are frequent visitors when the plants are in flower.
