Rangers rescue lost, injured hikers

State Department of Conservation forest rangers rescued lost and injured hikers in Essex County this month.

Hoist rescue

A hiker, 37, from Peru, suffered a 20-foot fall on Poke-O-Moonshine Mountain in Chesterfield at 4:40 p.m. on Sunday. After locating the hiker, forest rangers and State Police aviation prepared for a hoist rescue. Rangers Corenne Black, Charles Foutch, Logan Quinn and Scott Sabo Jr. stabilized the hiker and packaged her into a litter. Ranger Andrew Lewis and State Police pilot Scott Kotronis hoisted the hiker into the helicopter and transported her to a hospital. Resources were clear at 7:15 p.m.

Lost hiker

Ray Brook dispatch received a call from an SOS beacon near Moose Pond and the Northville Placid Trail at 6:20 p.m. on May 8. The hiker, 70, from North Carolina, was lost but uninjured. Forest rangers Nicole DuChene and Robert Praczkajlo reached the hiker at 10:40 p.m. and determined that he needed rest before hiking out. They helped him to the Moose Pond lean-to, where he spent the night. The following morning, at 11:39 a.m., the rangers returned to the lean-to and helped the hiker back to the trailhead. Resources were clear at 2:27 p.m.
