WILMINGTON — This looks to be the final weekend for skiing and snowboarding at the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center.

Whiteface reported Friday that the 1980 Winter Olympic venue will be open today and Sunday — serviced by the Cloudsplitter Gondola, Face Lift and Summit Lift. On Friday, there was wind and rain and temperatures in the low 60s. One lift serviced 17 trails on Friday.

“We hope to have top-to-bottom skiing for both days, weather and conditions permitting,” an email from the ski center stated on Friday. “Mother Nature has thrown some uncooked snow at us this week, which has resulted in terrain loss daily, but our groomers have been busy pushing snow where we can to save the base for one last weekend of skiing.”

Today at 1:30 p.m., the band Nubble will close out Whiteface Mountain’s Cloudspin Music Series upstairs in the Cloudspin Bar and Grill.

The National Weather Service forecast for today is calling for a chance of rain and snow showers before 8 a.m., then rain showers and a high near 40 degrees F. Chance of precipitation is 80%, with little or no snow accumulation expected. Tonight, the low is expected to be around 32, with rain and snow showers before 1 a.m., then a chance of snow showers between 1 and 2 a.m. Chance of precipitation is 70% on Sunday with rain showers before 8 a.m., rain and snow showers between 8 and 9 a.m., then rain showers likely after 9 a.m. The high is expected to be around 49. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph.

Last week, a nor’easter dumped snow on the region, but rain, wind and warm temperatures have reduced that late-season snow. The annual Pond Skimming Contest was held on Saturday, April 6.

The ski center opened for the season on Nov. 24. Whiteface closed for the season on April 16 last year.
