RAQUETTE LAKE — The Raquette Lake Preservation Foundation, or RLPF, will offer three scholarships to support youth that want to study a conservation-related field in college and work as watercraft inspection stewards this summer.

The scholarships will be offered to college students who work as boat stewards at boat launches in and near the Raquette Lake Watershed, helping to protect the area’s waterways.

“Raquette Lake, and the Raquette River Watershed, are vital to the overall health of the Adirondack Park. Boat stewards at Raquette Lake and its neighboring headwaters communities of Blue Mountain Lake and Long Lake help preserve waterways by inspecting boats and trailers and offering important educational opportunities to the public,” a news release from RLPF reads. “RLPF has been working hard to engage with the next generation of lake protectors, and these scholarships will help those interested in an environmental education to develop a lasting appreciation for Raquette Lake and the Adirondack Park.”

The scholarships are being offered as an additional incentive on top of a boat steward’s salary. Those employed as stewards for at least 20 hours per week for eight weeks or more will be eligible for the $400 scholarships. There will be three of these awards available in 2024, and since many prior stewards had local ties, RLPF feels that this is a great way to give back to the community and encourage students to study a conservation-related path in college.

Those interested in becoming a boat steward for the 2024 season can learn more about the Adirondack Watershed Institute’s Stewardship Program, view a map of boat launch stations in the Adirondacks, or apply to become a watercraft inspection steward.
