Eclipse-themed exhibit at Artists Guild opens April 8

“Preparing for an Eclipse” by Anastasia Osolin (Provided artwork)

SARANAC LAKE — The Adirondack Artists Guild will host an informal Plein Air Eclipse Exhibit for local artists and photographers.

While plein air painters are more commonly known for spending their time outdoors painting scenic views, this time artists will be tasked with capturing some of the elements or effects of the eclipse on April 8. The gallery will be open in the evening until 8 p.m., as part of Saranac Lake’s Solar Fest. An exhibit reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. and the show will remain on display until April 17.

Painters are encouraged to go out earlier in the day to start a painting or two of a view of their choice — then be on site, with their protective eclipse glasses, to witness and paint what happens during the total eclipse. Will it just get dark for a few minutes or will there be sunset or twilight effects that impact the landscape? For many, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The artists will be expected to finish up their paintings and then deliver them to the artists guild before 6 p.m. They do not need to be framed and will be displayed on table top easels.

Photographers are also invited to contribute to this show by going out during the eclipse to capture it on film. Their challenge will be to get home and get an image printed in time to bring it to the gallery by 6 p.m. Photos should be mounted or matted.

There is no cost to participate, but those interested are asked to register with the gallery so they will know how many to expect. Call 518-891-2615 or email guild@adirondackartistsguild.com. The exhibit will be on display from April 8-17, while the annual juried show is up on the gallery walls. For those who are submitting work, organizers ask that artists bring a beverage or food item for the reception in the evening of April 8.
