SARANAC LAKE — The 26th annual juried show at the Adirondack Artists Guild opened on Friday with a gala reception.

Seventy-four works by 64 artists, chosen by juror Laura Desmond of the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, comprise the show.

“With such a large number of submissions, and limited exhibition space, I knew that many fine works would ultimately be left out of the show, but I proceeded by addition, rather than subtraction, picking pieces that I knew I wanted to include in the exhibit,” Desmond wrote in a statement. “These were works with a compelling conjunction of concept, medium, and technique, where an idea was pursued with purpose, dedication, and command of the formal properties of the work.”

The first prize, given by the artists guild, went to Charles Reinertsen for his photograph “Grand Prismatic of the Adirondack Park.” Chris Covert of Guide Boat Realty donated the second prize to Michaele Glennon for her wool yarn piece “Ice Fishing Blues.” Diane Leifheit won third prize for her pastel painting “Torrent, Rossie Falls,” given by Lindy Ellis and Rich Shapiro of Gear-to-Go Tandems.

Desmond also chose three pieces for honorable mentions. These went to Phil Gallos for his photograph “Portrait of Memory,” Valerie Patterson for her watercolor “That Persistent Memory,” and Samantha Stytzer for “The Journey,” a wood carving with wood burning and spray paint.

As always, Meg Bernstein made ribbons for the award-winning pieces, tailored especially for each one.

All the artwork in the show will be on the guild’s website, adirondackartistsguild.com, and purchases may be made through the website.

Once again, a local friend of the arts is donating a people’s choice award. Visitors may vote for their favorite piece and the winner will be announced at the end of the show on April 17.

The Adirondack Artists Guild is a cooperative retail art gallery representing a diverse group of artists residing and working in the Tri-Lakes region of the Adirondack Park.
